Nuremberg, Germany — November 25, 2014 — ODVA announced today that it has authorized two Test Service Providers to conduct ODVA conformance testing services for CIP Safety in Germany. The Institute of Ergonomics, Manufacturing Systems and Automation (IAF) at the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg has been authorized as a Test Service Provider (TSP) for CIP Safety™ on EtherNet/IP™, and the Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW) at the University of Stuttgart has been authorized as a TSP for CIP Safety™ on Sercos®. ISW joins ODVA’s TSP community in 2014 effective with its appointment for CIP Safety on Sercos. IAF has served as a TSP to ODVA since 2008.

ODVA conformance testing provides industry with the vendor-independent assurance that products built to the ODVA specifications comply with those specifications and interoperate in multi-vendor installations. CIP Safety, ODVA’s media-independent protocol technology for the implementation of functional safety in networked control systems, is defined in ODVA’s implementation specification, The CIP Safety Specification. The CIP Safety Specification has defined three possible network implementations for the CIP Safety technology – EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet™ and Sercos.

“The appointment of ISW as an ODVA TSP for CIP Safety on Sercos is a natural evolution of the cooperation between ODVA and Sercos International on CIP Safety,” said Peter Lutz, managing director of Sercos International. “Building on its expertise in the Sercos technology, ISW will provide vendors of Sercos devices seeking CIP Safety testing in Germany with excellent support.”

”Adoption of CIP Safety is becoming more widespread across industries and geographies,” said Katherine Voss, president and executive director of ODVA. “ODVA’s expansion of conformance testing services for CIP Safety, at both its current TSP for EtherNet/IP in Magdeburg and also Sercos International’s existing test center for its technology, will benefit vendors and users of networked functional safety control systems with increased conformance testing capacity and availability in Germany, one of the world’s leading automation markets.”

To obtain an ODVA Declaration of Conformity to The CIP Safety Specification, a product must demonstrate conformity to the relevant network specification and to The CIP Safety Specification, plus must demonstrate overall compliance with IEC 61508 as determined by a competent body in functional safety. Initially, conformance testing at ISW will be available for Sercos slave devices and at IAF for EtherNet/IP target devices. In the future, ODVA anticipates that other testing services for CIP Safety may be added at these TSPs based on continued growth and demand for CIP Safety development support in Europe.

About ODVA
Founded in 1995, ODVA is a global association whose members are comprised of the world’s leading automation companies. ODVA’s mission is to advance open, interoperable information and communication technologies in industrial automation. ODVA recognizes its media independent network protocol, the Common Industrial Protocol or “CIP™” – and the network adaptations of CIP – EtherNet/IP™, DeviceNet™, CompoNet™ and ControlNet™ – as its core technology and the primary common interest of its membership. For future interoperability of production systems and the integration of the production systems with other systems, ODVA embraces the adoption of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and standard, unmodified Internet and Ethernet technologies as a guiding principle wherever possible. This principle is exemplified by EtherNet/IP – the world’s number one industrial Ethernet network.
