Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA — November 28, 2017 — ODVA announced today that CIP Safety, its extension to the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™) for functional safety applications, has been adopted by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) of the People’s Republic of China as Chinese National Standard GB/Z 34066-2017. The approval of the standard was supported by the Chinese Standardization Technical Committee TC124 for “Industrial Process Measurement,” and the project was managed by the Instrument Technology and Economy Institute (ITEI).

CIP Safety provides fail-safe communication between devices, such as safety I/O blocks, safety interlock switches, safety light curtains, and safety PLCs in functional safety applications up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3), pursuant to IEC 61508 standards and as certified by TÜV Rheinland. CIP Safety is a proven and widely adopted solution for functional safety and has been working in the field since 2005 when it was first deployed on ODVA’s CAN-based network DeviceNet™. Today CIP Safety is the functional safety standard for DeviceNet™, EtherNet/IP™ as well Sercos III™, the industrial Ethernet technology supported by Sercos International.

Adoption of network-connected devices with CIP Safety has grown faster than industrial networks overall as functional safety networks have unlocked the potential to proliferate safe and flexible production processes throughout industrial automation. “In recent years, the Chinese government has put increased emphasis on the adoption of technology and standards for safety applications,” stated Katherine Voss, president of ODVA. “Adoption of CIP Safety as a Chinese national standard will promote increased adoption of the technology in China as a premier safety solution for the automation of industry processes.”

The GB/Z 34066-2017 standard is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2018.

About ODVA
Founded in 1995, ODVA is a global association whose members comprise the world’s leading automation companies. ODVA’s mission is to advance open, interoperable information and communication technologies in industrial automation. ODVA recognizes its media independent network protocol, the Common Industrial Protocol or “CIP” – and the network adaptations of CIP – EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet and ControlNet – as its core technology and the primary common interest of its membership. ODVA’s vision is to contribute to the sustainability and prosperity of the global community by transforming the model for information and communication technology in the industrial ecosystem. For future interoperability of production systems and the integration of the production systems with other systems, ODVA embraces the adoption of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and standard, unmodified Internet and Ethernet technologies as a guiding principle wherever possible. This principle is exemplified by EtherNet/IP – the world’s number one industrial Ethernet network. For more information about ODVA, visit odva.org.
