Has your company decided to develop EtherNet/IP™ products? The flexibility and application range of EtherNet/IP brings choice. What functionality should be included in a product? What are the key sections of the technical specifications to read? What implementation approaches are available? If you are a product engineer, manager, or are responsible for turning commercial product specs into engineering specs, this "EtherNet/IP Quick Start for Vendors" course will give you the information you need to get your product to market quickly. Attend this course, brought to you by ODVA - the association that develops and manages the EtherNet/IP technology - to learn more about how to evaluate these issues for your needs. Course agenda includes:

  • Technical overview of the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™) and EtherNet/IP™, including information on OSI, object model, object class, device profile, messaging, I/O connection types, and EDS files
  • Recent EtherNet/IP enhancements, including objects for energy awareness and measurement
  • Maximizing your device: Quality of Service, Device Level Ring, and CIP Sync™
  • Getting started with your EtherNet/IP development, including an overview of the steps to become an official EtherNet/IP vendor, and recommendations for new developers about how to read The EtherNet/IP Specification
  • Understanding your EtherNet/IP product's functional requirements, including a discussion of device types and capabilities, defining your application data and choosing a device profile, recommended EtherNet/IP functionality, additional device functional considerations, and performance requirements
  • Choosing an implementation approach for your unique situation
  • EtherNet/IP product design considerations, including a review of software, hardware, physical layer, and performance
  • Testing your EtherNet/IP product.

The PlugFest provides an opportunity for EtherNet/IP product vendors to test their product against a suite of interoperability tests with a number of other product and infrastructure vendors. The goal of the PlugFest is to provide feedback to the developer regarding any possible interoperability problems before they are discovered in the field.

The workshops and materials will be provided in English. Local language assistance will be provided on a volunteer basis by participating attendees, if available. Non-ODVA members are welcome.

EtherNet/IP Interoperability Advisory Test

The formal test procedure comprises testing products for compliance to the following recommendations:

Interoperability testing comprises two parts:

  • Device interoperability testing, in which devices are tested against a predefined test configuration and test procedure (see EtherNet/IP Interoperability Test Procedures (Pub 95) in the Publication Download area), including:
    • EDS verification — all devices
    • Network interoperability — all devices
    • Common interoperability — all devices
    • I/O adapter interoperability — I/O adapter devices
    • Explicit message client interoperability — explicit message client devices
    • I/O scanner interoperability — I/O scanner devices
  • System interoperability testing, in which devices are tested in a multi-vendor system configuration and test procedure.

Devices are also tested for stated performance levels of:

  • Fastest cyclic production rate (RPI) supported by the device
  • Jitter
  • Background traffic effects on cyclic traffic

For devices that achieve passing results that have a valid Declaration of Conformity (or receive one within six months of the PlugFest), the Declaration of Conformity's Advisory Test section indicates that a product implements the additional functionality recommended in the EtherNet/IP Interoperability Recommendation publications.

Please note that all devices built to EtherNet/IP must obtain a Declaration of Conformity as required by the Terms of Usage Agreement completed by every licensed vendor. Passing or participating in the PlugFest does not waive this requirement.
